Cutch Extract is made from the Acacia catechu tree and is common to most parts of the southern Himalaya foothills including India and Burma. This tree yields many Ayurveda products from the bark, wood, seeds, etc. The dye extract is made by steeping the heartwood in hot water until the liquid becomes syrupy. The thick liquid is cooled, pressed, cut into cubes, dried, and then ground to a powder for dyeing.

Color: Caramel to Coffee Brown

Alum yields yellow-brown to red-brown

A Soda Ash rinse will redden the color

The deepest colors from cutch extract develop slowly and require a two-hour simmer followed by an overnight cool-down.
